How to use the shortcut finder
- Pick Windows or Mac. The page chooses for you from your system and remembers your last choice.
- Type an action in the search box, for example "undo", "new tab" or "ctrl shift t". The tables below filter as you type.
- Use the category buttons to narrow the list to text editing, Windows, File Explorer, macOS, Finder, web browsers, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel or screenshots.
- To identify a combination, click the Press a shortcut box and press it. The tool shows the keys it received and every action that uses them. Press Esc to leave the box.
What keyboard shortcuts are and how modifier keys work
A keyboard shortcut is a key combination that triggers a command without the mouse. Most start with a modifier key held down, followed by a letter, number or function key.
- Windows: Ctrl, Alt, Shift and the Win key. Win combinations control the system itself, such as locking the screen.
- Mac: Cmd, Option, Ctrl, Shift and Fn.
The two systems map closely. For most app shortcuts, Cmd on a Mac does what Ctrl does on Windows, and Option matches Alt. So copy is Ctrl+C on Windows and Cmd+C on Mac. There are exceptions. Moving to the start of a line is Home on Windows and Cmd+Left on Mac, and the Mac Delete key is the one Windows calls Backspace.
The 10 shortcuts everyone should know
These work in nearly every app. Windows first, Mac second.

- Cut: Ctrl+X / Cmd+X
- Paste: Ctrl+V / Cmd+V
- Undo: Ctrl+Z / Cmd+Z
- Redo: Ctrl+Y / Cmd+Shift+Z

Windows shortcut keys worth learning first
Most Windows shortcut keys that save real time use the Win key.
- Win+D shows or hides the desktop.
- Win+E opens File Explorer.
- Win+L locks the computer.
- Win+V opens clipboard history.
- Win+Shift+S snips a region of the screen.
- Alt+Tab switches between open apps.
- Ctrl+Shift+Esc opens Task Manager.
The complete list, with File Explorer and virtual desktop combinations, is in the full guide to Windows shortcuts.
Mac essentials
Mac keyboard shortcuts lean on Cmd, often with Shift or Option added.
- Cmd+Space opens Spotlight search.
- Cmd+Tab switches between open apps.
- Cmd+Q quits the app. Cmd+W only closes the window.
- Cmd+Option+Esc opens Force Quit Applications.
- Cmd+Shift+4 captures a selected area; Cmd+Shift+5 opens the screenshot and recording toolbar.
- Cmd+Shift+. shows or hides hidden files in Finder and in open and save dialogs.
Finder, Spaces and Mission Control shortcuts are covered in the full guide to Mac shortcuts.
Browser shortcuts for any computer
These are the browser combinations most people reach for. Windows first, Mac second.
- New tab: Ctrl+T / Cmd+T. Close tab: Ctrl+W / Cmd+W.
- Focus the address bar: Ctrl+L / Cmd+L.
- Next tab: Ctrl+Tab on both systems.
- Hard refresh: Ctrl+Shift+R / Cmd+Shift+R.
- Developer Tools: F12 / Cmd+Option+I.
Why a shortcut does not work
- Reserved by the system. Some combinations are handled by the operating system or browser before a web page sees them, including Alt+F4, Win key combinations, Cmd+Q and Cmd+Tab. The capture box cannot show these, even though they work on your computer.
- The app overrides it. Apps assign their own meaning to some combinations. Ctrl+E centres text in Word but focuses the search box in File Explorer. Check the category for the app you are in.
- Fn lock or the wrong mode. On many laptops the top row defaults to volume, brightness and other media actions, so F-key shortcuts need Fn held down, or the Fn lock switched off.
- A different layout. Shortcuts follow the letter printed on the key for your language layout. On a QWERTZ keyboard, undo is on the key labelled Z, which sits where Y does on a US board. See the keyboard layout page to identify yours.
- A faulty key. If a key never registers, check it with the keyboard tester. For wider problems, read keyboard not working.

Frequently asked questions
What are keyboard shortcut keys?
Keyboard shortcut keys are key combinations that run a command without the mouse. You hold one or more modifier keys, such as Ctrl, Alt, Shift or Cmd, and press another key. For example, Ctrl+S saves a file.
What are the most useful computer shortcut keys?
Copy, cut, paste, undo, select all, find, save and print cover most daily work. They are Ctrl+C, X, V, Z, A, F, S and P on Windows. On a Mac, use Cmd in place of Ctrl.
What is the Mac equivalent of Ctrl?
For most app shortcuts, Cmd replaces Ctrl, so Ctrl+V becomes Cmd+V. A few shortcuts still use Ctrl on a Mac, such as Ctrl+Tab to move to the next browser tab. Option is the Mac counterpart of Alt.
How do I take a screenshot with a keyboard shortcut?
On Windows, press Win+Shift+S to snip a region, or PrtSc to capture the full screen. On a Mac, press Cmd+Shift+3 for the full screen or Cmd+Shift+4 for a selected area.
How do I reopen a tab I closed by accident?
Press Ctrl+Shift+T on Windows or Cmd+Shift+T on a Mac. Repeat it to bring back earlier tabs in the order you closed them.
Why does the capture box not show Alt+F4 or Cmd+Q?
The operating system or browser handles those combinations before the page receives them, so no website can detect them. Others in this group include Win key combinations, Ctrl+W, Ctrl+T and Cmd+Tab. They still work as normal; look them up in the tables instead.
Why do my keyboard shortcuts not work?
Common causes are a combination the app uses differently, a laptop top row that needs Fn, a different keyboard layout, or a key that no longer registers. Test the keys on the keyboard tester, then see keyboard not working if a key is dead.
Do Windows keyboard shortcuts work on a Mac keyboard?
Not directly. A Mac has no Win key, and shortcuts that depend on it, such as Win+D, do not exist in macOS. Use the Mac column in the tables to find the matching command. Many app shortcuts do carry over with Cmd in place of Ctrl.
Is this shortcut finder free and private?
Yes. It runs in your browser with no sign-up. The keys you press in the capture box are checked on your device and are never sent to a server.
