Xbox Controller Test: Check Buttons, Triggers and Sticks
This Xbox controller test shows every button, trigger and stick of your pad live in the browser. Connect the controller by cable or Bluetooth, press any button, and the on-screen Xbox controller lights up as you go. It works with Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S controllers, and nothing needs to be installed.
Connect your controller by USB or Bluetooth, then press any button (browsers only reveal a controller after a button press).

How to test your Xbox controller
- Connect the controller to your computer using one of the methods in the next section.
- Press any button. Browsers only reveal a controller after the first press, so the tool shows "None detected" until you do.
- Press every button, push both sticks in all directions and squeeze both triggers. Each button lights up while held and counts as tested.
- Watch the "N / 17 buttons tested" counter. Press Reset to start again, for example with a second controller.
- Run the stick drift check, the circularity test and the vibration buttons if you want to check more than the buttons.
The tool starts with the Xbox skin. If you connect a PlayStation pad you can switch skins with the buttons above the controller; for a DualSense, the PS5 controller test page starts on the PlayStation skin.
How to connect an Xbox controller to a PC
- USB cable: plug the controller into the computer with a USB-C cable (Series X|S) or a micro-USB cable (Xbox One). Use a data cable; some charge-only cables do not carry input.
- Bluetooth: hold the pair button on the top edge, next to the USB port, until the Xbox button flashes quickly. On Windows open Settings, then Bluetooth & devices, choose Add device, pick Bluetooth and select the controller. Bluetooth is built into Xbox One controllers from the 2016 redesign onward and into Series X|S controllers.
- Xbox Wireless Adapter: plug the adapter into a USB port, then hold the pair button on the adapter and on the controller.
Mac, Linux and Android also detect Xbox controllers over cable or Bluetooth, though pairing steps differ by system. Once the controller is connected, press a button on this page so the browser picks it up.
What each Xbox button is called in the test
The skin and counter use the standard Xbox names:
- Face buttons: A, B, X, Y
- Bumpers and triggers: LB, RB, LT, RT
- Center buttons: View (the left small button), Menu (the right small button) and the Xbox button
- Stick clicks: L3 and R3, pressed by pushing each stick straight down
- D-pad: up, down, left, right
The Share button on the Series X|S controller may not appear, because browsers do not always expose it. If everything else lights up and only Share stays dark, that is usually a browser limit and not a broken button. The Xbox button can also be taken by Windows to open the Game Bar before the page sees it.
Triggers and trigger rumble
LT and RT are analog, so the test shows each one as a percentage bar from 0% to 100%. Press slowly: the bar should rise smoothly and return to 0% when released. A bar that stops short of 100% or jumps in steps points to a worn trigger sensor.
The Vibration section offers Weak, Strong and Both motors for the two main motors. Xbox One and Series X|S controllers also have impulse triggers, with a small motor inside each trigger. The tool shows the left trigger, right trigger and both triggers buttons only when the browser reports that effect. Support depends on the browser and the connection: Chrome and Edge are the most likely to work with an Xbox controller. If the browser does not support vibration, the tool says so instead of showing buttons.
Stick drift and circularity
Stick drift means a stick reports movement when you are not touching it. Start the 5-second drift check, let go of both sticks, and read the verdict for each one. You can also raise the deadzone slider to see how much a game needs to filter. For a deeper look, use the circularity buttons and rotate a stick slowly around its edge: the trace should look like a smooth circle. The dedicated stick drift test page explains the results in more detail.
Xbox Elite and other controllers
The Elite Series 2 works like a standard Xbox controller here. Its paddles are usually not reported as separate buttons by browsers. They typically mirror other buttons, so pressing a paddle lights up the button it is mapped to. Third-party pads that use the standard gamepad mapping also work; the Mapping field in the tool shows what the browser reports. If a pad shows a different mapping, button positions on the skin may not match the labels. The general controller test covers those cases.
If your Xbox controller is not detected or misbehaves
- Not detected: press a button after the page loads. Close other tabs or apps that use the controller, such as Steam, which can claim it.
- Bluetooth keeps dropping: remove the controller in Bluetooth & devices, then pair it again from scratch.
- Cable problems: try a different cable and a different USB port, preferably directly on the computer and not on a hub.
- Dead or flickering buttons: replace the batteries or charge the pack, then update the controller firmware with the Xbox Accessories app from the Microsoft Store.
- Button works in the test but not in a game: the game or a remapping tool is the cause. Close remapping software and check the in-game controls.
Frequently asked questions
How do I test my Xbox controller online?
Connect it by USB or Bluetooth, open this page and press any button. The on-screen controller lights up for every button you press, and the counter shows how many of the 17 buttons have been tested. Then check the trigger bars, the sticks and the drift check.
Why does the test say no controller is detected?
Browsers hide a gamepad until you press a button on it. Press any button after the page loads. If nothing happens, reconnect the cable or pair again, try another USB port, and close apps such as Steam that may be using the controller.
Does this work with an Xbox Series X controller?
Yes. Xbox Series X|S controllers connect over USB-C or Bluetooth and use the same standard mapping as Xbox One controllers. The Share button may not appear, because browsers do not always report it.
Can I test an Xbox One controller?
Yes. Connect it with a micro-USB cable, with the Xbox Wireless Adapter, or by Bluetooth if it is a model that supports it. The older 2013 model has no Bluetooth and needs the cable or adapter.
How do I check for stick drift on an Xbox controller?
Press Start drift check, then let go of both sticks for 5 seconds. The tool reports whether each stick stayed near center. A stick that reads movement while untouched has drift. Cleaning around the stick base sometimes helps, but a worn sensor usually needs repair or replacement.
Why do the vibration buttons not show up?
Vibration through the browser depends on the browser, the controller and how it is connected. Chrome and Edge are the most likely to support it with an Xbox controller. If the browser does not report it, the tool shows a message instead of the buttons.
Why does the Share button not light up?
The Share button on Series X|S controllers may not be reported by your browser, so it may not appear in any web-based test. If all other buttons work, the controller is most likely fine.
Can I test the paddles on an Xbox Elite controller?
Browsers usually do not report Elite paddles as separate buttons. They generally mirror other buttons, so pressing a paddle lights up whichever button it is assigned to in the Xbox Accessories app.
How do I fix an Xbox controller that disconnects?
Replace the batteries or charge the pack, remove the controller from Bluetooth settings and pair it again, and update its firmware with the Xbox Accessories app. If it still drops, test it with a USB cable to see whether the problem is the wireless connection or the controller.
